Burdens Cork Wind Farm Solutions
Over the last few decades wind energy has aroused renewed interest due to it's environmental benefits over fossil fuels (fuels such as coal, oil, gas and peat are fossil fuels which take thousands of years to form and create pollution and climate change) and to the increased security it can deliver to Ireland's fuel supply (about 90% of Ireland's energy currently comes from imports, making us the least self-sufficient country in the industrialised world). On the other hand Ireland has one of the best wind resources in the world.
Since the first commercial wind farm in Ireland at Bellacorrick, Co. Mayo in 1992, an increasing number of projects are appearing in all regions of Ireland. As the economics of wind projects became more favourable and attractive many more areas across the country became suitable for wind turbines.
By the end of July 2011 there were 110 grid connected wind farms in the Republic of Ireland, the power output of these wind turbines totalling 1,379 MW (1 megawatt = 1 thousand kilowatts) and generating enough green electricity to supply more than 500,000 homes. A number of other projects are under construction and many more have been granted planning permission and/or that all important grid connection offer. The total power output should exceed 1,500 MW by the end of 2011.
